CUT TO THE CHASE
My 25 year relationship with "Ellie"
the origin of the phrase 'Cut to the chase' originated in the US film industry. Many early silent films ended in chase sequences preceded by obligatory romantic storylines. The first reference to it dates back to that era, just after the first 'talkie' - The Jazz Singer, 1927. It is a script direction from Joseph Patrick McEvoy's novel Hollywood Girl, 1929:to talk about or deal with the important parts of a subject and not waste time with things that are not important:The precept as it applies to films is as prevalent now as it was in the silent film days. Many, in fact it is not too strong to say most, films aimed at a young male audience involve plot devices that allow for car/boat/spacecraft chases. There is usually a token love interest storyline before everything in sight ends up in pieceWhat's the origin of the phrase 'Chick flick'?o that 'chick flicks' were the sexually exploitative films, like those made by directors like Russ Meyers, which were designed to appeal to male sexual fantasy.Foremost amongst these was the 1991 film 'Thelma & Louise', starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. This had the promotional tagline 'Somebody said get a life... so they did'. The film, which had a woman writer, was extremely successful and led to film studios becoming aware of a potential new audience. When we “cut to the chase,” it just means that we need to get to the point or skip the unnecessary details to get straight to the vital information. In English, we often use it when we feel like our time is being wasted or when we want to move a conversation along more quickly. I know it might seem a little blunt or impolite to some people but saying “cut to the chase” isn’t inherently rude. It can be a useful phrase when you find that time is limited and helps move things along more quickly.
