Artist Statement
Art as experience Conceptual Art

I am nature and nature is me
Artist statement from Nancy Forrester
I take part in mankind's oldest form of o environmental conservation the preservation
of sacred sites on earth. As guardian of one such site for 42 years I am honored to be
connected to a place known as Nancy Forresters Secret Garden a descriptive
term used by Dennis Reeves Cooper editor of Key West the Newspaper.  This landmark
exists at the center of the original island close to the highest elevation.  It is an oasis of
fecund earth that stirs deep connection with our wild energy. Here the soil spirals down
to meet the underground river of Miami’s aquifer which flows towards the sea cutting
viaducts in ancient oolite. Spiritual experiences are born out of the terrain itself. Human
culture hallows the ground where ashes mingle with detritus. Genius Magic Ray says
“ the solution hole is the beginning of the Bermuda Triangle and Nancy is the keeper
of knowledge”.   It is the animate and inanimate spirit of the place that casts the spell of
the sensuous. It draws people from far and wide.to Key West.
Artists, naturalists and wildlife feel the uninterrupted magnetic emery from Earths core and
understand the interconnections.
In 1993 I began a Visionary Environment project using many  artistic disciplines
site specific art.
Installation with plants, performance to encouraging emotive outpouring for the loss of
the natural world. The fusion of art and life sustainable art and eco-conceptual art.
I invited this community, the visiting public and the world to co-create to save this story and place
This collaborative has been described in colorful ways “Jurassic Park sans dinosaurs” said
Mark Caputo or as Steven Steens once said an “Oasis of Sanity”.  Vegetation and
ownership sec-session will come and go as it has in the past  but Nancy Forrester’s
Secret Garden will never be for sale because it is conceptual art that thrives in fertile minds.
It is a garden of revelation. Jerry Kemler pointed out the statement above does not
acknowledge the loss of the physical landmark, being walled out and losing access to this
healing land is extremely painful to me and others. I deeply appreciate all others and non
human for their efforts to keep this land undeveloped and open to the public.  I thank
Leon Russel for the lyrics “I love you in a place where there is no space or time, it helps me
now when I cry and ”I am not alone now because I am sing this song to you”
I have surrounded myself with all my visual art books, tools of the trade and people
and plants and animal that give meaning to my life
Candace Whitaker says “Don’t forget Nature Bats Last”
As an artist and environment teacher interested in bio mimicker y or innovation inspired
by nature and the spell of the sensuous, I continue to live, work and crate sanctuary for
unwanted parrots and orchids at 518 Elizabeth Gallery and Garden.  Visitors entrance will
remain open at 1 Free School Lane through March 31 and reopen at 518 Elizabeth Street
on April 1, 2012
For years my goals and methods have been miss understood by the media & visitors
My reason for writing the story of my life is to inform and correct the misperceptions of my life's work.
I have been labeled Plant Lady, Garden Lady, Bird lady, Parrot Lady.
I wish to be known as the environment artist that I am and valued for my art work in various mediums.
I am Lady Eco-artist whose passion is to save plants and animals from extinction.
search of a medium that allows reflexion my feelings towards money modern society, politics sexism I  introduse ffound object  in my artworks, among them live animals but also fire, earth, plants ,rock  money . I replaced the canvas and the gallery with plants,  consisted  and performances using unusual materials,

Jesper Roos, age six:   Nancy's Garden is like a giant lung it provides fresh air for all of Key West.
“As an artist I have a job to do.  My handmade environment expresses my personal moral vision. I am obliged to educate and activate
others.  All of us are nature and nature is us. When we harm nature, we harm ourselves and our ability to sustain ourselves on the
planet. Everyone must protect and restore the natural world if we are to survive.”

My work is valued when people take time to look past beauty and experience the sense of place and what it means to lose it, move
from passive observer to activist:  When they inhabit the world the way I inhabit my garden.”

Volunteer Jesper Roos at age 9 put it succinctly “Nancy’s garden is a giant lung - it provides fresh air for all of Key West”.

PUBLIC PERCEPTION:
MY ART: THE GARDEN
The Media is responsible for the  perception of the place and for
narrowing the definition of my art work to garden, gardening and
the display of plants.
The name Nancy Forrester's Secret Garden came into use when
Dennis Reeves Cooper of Key West the Newspaper used it as a
descriptive term.  It is also known as Key West's Exotic Tropical
Botanical Garden.  It is listed under Tourist Attractions as Key
West's Rainforest!  It is Internationally famous for its beauty,
shade palms, aroids, ferns and its rare and endangered plants,
its parrots.  Charles Kuralt America states "..... you can easily get
lost in the beauty of the place...." Journalist Mark Caputo wrote,
"It's Jurassic Park sans dinosaurs." While the media continues to
focus on a display of beautiful plants and animals for the
amusement of tourists, my vision has a higher purpose.
MY INTENSION
MY ART: A VISIONARY ENVIRONMENT
My wish is for humanity to restore balance to the natural world.  I
want others learn from nature and to open their hearts to feel the
love I have for all life forms. I work passionately  to save the last
undeveloped wooded acre of open land in the heart of  "old town"
Key West  to help life on Earth and to provide environmental
education to the public. Each of us can bring innovative action to
our lifestyle to be harmonious with nature
As an eco artist, I engage the public with a complex mix of
contemporary artistic disciplines, site specific art, Gardens of
Revelation, fusion of art and life, and acting.
I have created a powerful evocative spectacle on an important site
to activate the place. The precious land, its very topography, is not
the setting for the work but part of the work.  The financial tension
of high density development surrounding this last open space is
extreme!”  Extinction looms for the last wooded undeveloped acre
in the heart of "old town" Key West.  Funds are needed now to
save this precious land and its myriad life forms.  The human
fiduciary response to this environmental need is the most
important component of my art.
Artists are the shamans of the post-modern world and
there is only one thing for them to do, save the natural
world."
Joseph Campbell
Power of the Myth

My art is inspired by science, the beauty and complexity of
Earths living systems, the spell of the sensuous and
the intelligence of rehomed parrots.

My teaching is impassioned by my desire to protect life on
earth, keep the world as natural as possible and provide
the quality care for unwanted parrots.
